Yesterday (Saturday 5 October) was one of those happy occasions when I've seen reptiles without having been searching for them.   I and my wife were out for a walk in the north-east Hampshire countryside at 1pm when she spotted a medium-sized Grass Snake basking in some bracken at the edge of a footpath.   A quick search nearby located another two Grass Snakes inter-twined).  All of them retreated within a few seconds of being seen.   It was a small hedge-row habitat patch I'd been past many times before (in a farmland area away from the heathland sites I usually visit) and I had previously thought it looked a possible location for reptiles, but never seen any snakes or lizards there previously, and hadn't gone out to look for them this time.   On reflection conditions were probably near perfect - a warm 18C, no wind, cloudy and fairly humid.

PS - I used to post quite regularly on this forum a few years ago.  Lack of more recent updates doesn't mean I've lost interest in herps.  Amongst other things I've acquired some tins and with the local wildlife trust have for the past two seasons  been monitoring some nearby heathland sites here in Hampshire.  And I still enjoy looking for reptiles in Purbeck.

Hi Peter, glad you're back!  nice to hear about the grassies - were the intertwined ones mating, I wonder?  (I had a report of smooth snakes mating a few days ago from the great guys at ARC!)
