it was phenomenal footage, though no sign of the adder actually striking the chicks and then waiting for the bite to take effect - it made me wonder if the feathers presented some kind of barrier to the fangs. The adder certainly looked reluctant to make a meal of the second chick.

Had to laugh as the video has a warning, 'contains some upsetting scenes'. When I watched it earlier on I thought it also asked you to confirm you weren't a child. This must surely be quite mild compared to a lot of TV.

It may be a natural event as one assumes these nest cams run for months on end. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was set-up either. Seen filming a few times now and it usually consisted of pre-caught animals taken out of bags for the cameras..
Anybody got data on how often nestling birds figure in the adder's diet? I've seen accounts of them taking nestlings and have seen adders hunting in low bushes a few times. Never seen one regurgitate a chick though, so wonder how common it actually is. I was able to watch the clip after fibbing and saying I was an adult. |

Actually wonder if the BBC want rapped knuckles for the way this is presented with a warning.
As Will said 'sweet little chick', surely if it's a natural event - as they portray it - then the adder is just following its instincts. Yet another depiction of an adder as the villain. Which of the species shown is in decline and threatened? Not sure if commentary went with this, which might angle things a little differently. |

To be fair, they generally say about scenes of predation that the sight may be upsetting but the predator needs a meal or needs to survive. This year the same thing has been said about adders, badgers, foxes, cuckoos and black-backed gulls. There is no particular prejudice against adders. Last week they said that later in the series they were going to show adders mating. Perhaps it will be tonight.
Scenes of sudden death ARE upsetting, and should be, surely. The predator is not a villain, but this scene is a theatrical spectacle showing one of the most elemental and tragic facts of life. That is a very valuable thing.
