When I was weeding my garden on Sunday I came across a ball of dried grass under a plant. I thought it might have ben made by a small mammal but when I picked it up and was looking at it a lizard's head poked out. I know we have slow worms in the garden so I wondered if it was possible that this was some sort of slow worm nest? I have had a quick trawl on the internet but could find no reference to this. Any ideas?

I don't think slow worms build nests, but they will make use of disused mammal burrows, so perhaps an abandoned mammals nest which made a convenient lizard hide-out?

You often find field vole nests under lying or discarded objects and Slow-worms will exploit the same features...but its not just Slow-worms that use vole nests!

I find common toads in vole nests fairly often. Maybe a well-grown toad is a similar size to a curled-up vole?
