Managed to get out to my local newt spot last week for an hour or so in the early evening. The area is south and east facing clay banks with a meadow at the top and one at the bottom. The ponds are on a plateau up the banks and in the top meadow, 9 on the way up and 8 at the top. Only 7 in total were still holding water. A stop was made first in the bottom meadow for wood checking, under 3 sheets we found slow worms in bulk (!) and 2 female cresteds, one full adult and one half size. The main banks pond had a lot of newts topping as we stood and watched. A couple of net dips confirmed cresteds as, certainly some of, the culprits. Sheer bliss, I do like this time of year. |
