A friend has found several toad corpses around her house. There seem to be no visible injuries or signs of disease. Does anyone have any ideas about causes? Slug pellets have been suggested.

I'm not sure she's up for that. She wondered what the possibilities might be, that's all.

Does the ZSL still carry out post-mortems as part of its Frog Mortality Project? maybe enquire from ARG UK and then post off to them? finding a toad that seems to have succumbed to something so suddenly without any obvious signs or symptoms is worrying...

The Garden Wildlife Health Project does want reports of dead and diseased amphibians and reptiles and this has replaced the Frog Mortality Project as it still has the main partners of ZSL & Froglife, (along with BTO & RSPB plus other Forum members including ARGUK and ARC on the herp side).
On the front page of their website http://www.gardenwildlifehealth.org/" rel="nofollow - http://www.gardenwildlifehealth.org/ there's a blue panel saying "report sick or dead wildlife" and that takes you to a page to report it. They might want the corpse - but only of freshly dead animals - and if they do the vets will contact by email and explain how to package and label it.
