Hi all,

I have deliberately waited until my 1000th post to say that, not just in the light of recent events over my patch, but, I'm going to take a back seat now and leave the regular contributions to other devotees.

I'll still pop back now and again, like Al Hyde, Vicar, etc, but until I find another productive patch I'm sort of semi retiring.

I hope, even though I haven't seen eye to eye with everyone on all things that you generally think my contributions have been worthwhile, and I wish you all happy hunting.

See you soon, perhaps.

RThumbs Up

you got there right before me Suz!

im gutted.
like other ill really miss your specialist/experienced input Rob. youve informed this (relative) dunce no end and (in this punters opinion) regularly posted in an accessible and humorous format that helps win readers over to our (ie the herps) side.
posting helps stimulate interest and connects people to herps, like a site-bridging wildlife corridor. or something!
eg i didnt bother recording herps before i joined the site and now im obsessive about it!
part of that is down to the "regulars" like you.

so thanks for taking the time to share.

and if youre ever in Glos and want to see a few local Grassie sites....

best wishes for the future mate,
ben

Good luck with "another productive patch " Rob. Try to pop back now and again at least.

You have been (and still can be) a great asset to our little community.

Rob, you can't leave us on a low with 'Rushy Planed'!  come back with some good news - I'm sure you will.  1000 posts means you should be elevated to the rauk peerage, anyway!

Sorry to hear you feel that way Rob, but I do understand. I've been sort of semi-retired for some time now, rarely visiting old haunts and less enthusiastic about the whole thing in general to be honest thanks to these kind of events.

Don't become too distant though, plenty of us feel the same.

Old bloggers never die just moan and groan and heave a sigh ( with good reason)

well its your call rob and i haven't yet been through an experience like yours so can't say how i'd react but in my opinion the last thing we need is to lose another such experienced and knowledgeable forum member. i've benefitted enormously from your contributions over the years and you'll be missed.

hope you change your mind

take care

tim

Thanks for all your nice comments people.

If someone from NE would say that they're willing to bring back some of the Gateway Adders, Grassies etc from Wiltshire and restock EF with a greater care programme for future protection of the place, I could be persuaded to continue.

But let's face it, there's more chance of West Ham winning the premier league than that happening!

Now there's an idea!

But the only venomous snakes I have handled aside from the odd Adder are Taiwan Beauty snakes and American water snake - not exactly Cape Cobras!

Hope things are good out there, did you have anymore trouble with the bite area?

You have my sympathy on all this EF or should I say Effing forest management Rob its heart breaking to see these idiots playing about with the nature of the area to suit their own little world of how the public should perceive wildlife, Sadly due age and finances I would disapear back into the bush just as Tony has done. keith

Heres a bit a thought they rounded up all the EF fallow deer years ago from the forest to let it be taken over by non native deer.perhaps a snake cull is on the cards so the can give a home to pythons and homeless corn snakes?. keith

...a bit like giving gamekeepers the power to destroy buzzard nests to protect non native (and reptile-killing) pheasants, maybe?

That's weird Will, I just posted the same thing on the Allerthorpe thread!

Keith,

I heard a rumour (as you do) that part and parcel of the strimming was collecting up all the herps found and exporting.... To who knows where!!??

And I've mentioned to Gemma before certain other rumours about Herps being "collected" in EF and I'm sure now there's something behind it.

I don't think its a cull, more like a hush hush translocation.

I found a plastic box (broken) with vent holes in the top.

You know the sort - in reptile shops they keep the juvs in temporary boxes.

perhaps they're being translocated to a disused airfield in Wiltshire, after all, that's the best habitat for reptiles in the UK Wink
