hi folks

i try to get out herping/recording locally as often as possible. since theres no Glos ARG (please get in touch with me if you live in the county and are interested in helping me form/run 1) i usually just peruse a map, pick a route taking in different habitats and head off, hoping for the best.

following Noodles Daffodil suggestion in the "Bigger Lesser" thread, i journeyed to the Newent/Dymock/Kempley area today.
no herps unfortunately but my my, the "English Golden Triangle" was impressive!
nothing to do with opium of course. but you still got intoxicated - visually!

numerically they were so countless i simply couldnt decide which direction to walk in!
i was well and truly spoilt for choice!

name a habitat and they were present. often in mind-boggling densities.
hedgerows, roadsides (inc the M50 motorway), streambanks, pasture, private gardens, churchyards, orchards, woodland. the lot.

a beautiful sunny day for the "Daffodil Festival" and there were plenty of people and events taking place.
heres some pix from my visit and Marie Curie emblem Narcissus pseudonarcissus in all its profusionary glory.
quite a few pix im afraid. hope you dont get bored!
however, even if youve only the slightest interest in flora, im sure youd still be impressed by the scene there.

this is the route. appropriately funny isnt it? a heart-shaped footpath through the heart of England!

Daffodil Tea?
rather them than me. since the species is poisonous!

in case you didnt know/are wondering/slightest bit interested, these true Wild Daffs are short (circa 1' or less), have "drooping" heads, lemon-yellow corona and white perianth. the other native species being the Tenby Daffodil Narcissus obvallaris
any Welsh herpers got a pic of those to share?

habitats;

check out the incredible densities here! --

perhaps inevitably there were a few cultivars creeping in here and there too. for comparison theres a wild one to the right of this pic;

Narcissistic GLOS WLT volunteer ;

sorry this was rather long.

cheers if you got this far!

all the best!

Lovely Ben! What a day to be out and about. When I lived in the Lake District we had loads of true wild daffs everywhere, but here in East Devon I don't see so many.

Inspired by my encouragement to Ben i ended up taking the family (and [grand]parents) on a trip down to Herefordshire to see the Wild Dafs in my mum's old parish. A bit more off the beaten track than Ben's with much trespassing required, although funnily enough it was also on the 24th! When i get the pics off my phone i'll post them. Not seen the Tenby Daf.

Oh, how i wandered lonely as a cloud...eh Suzi!
Cheers
