just returned from Lakes. Whilst walking round Grasmere lake spotted a large toad. Green speckled back, yellow to bright orange belly with a red "Maltese cross" on each flank. Very long red toes. Sorry about poor description as only joined to find out what this was? Any ideas?

welcome, thanks for joining! if it was a toad it could only have been a female common toad Bufo bufo unless some exotic escape. It sounds a beauty! they can be colourful especially big old females, often reddish/orange. Female common frogs are also often very variable in colour. If your 'toad' had a rather pointed rather than rounded snout when seen from above with a dark patch behind the eye, pearly granules on the flanks and longish legs - leaping rather than flopping or crawling when disturbed, then it was probably a frog rather than a toad. Sorry not to be more definitive!
