Hi all, We are currently looking at investing in MapInfo both for our business and to keep tabs on our conservation based work. Be interested if anyone else uses MapInfo? Also, has any thought been given to a standardised way of recording, i.e. NARRS etc so we could be passing info around to various groups/organisations in a simple repeatable format. Thoughts please! |

Hi Gemma The GIS thing is a bit daunting but I am looking into this - I gather it is rather expensive for the licenses to the maps and stuff. Providing a summary of records within an Excel spreadsheet is useful because this can then be imported directly into mapmate which alot of people are using now for recording I know the Essex BRIE - Biological Recording Initiative for Essex are preparing their data with either recorder but also mapmate - Using the NARRS forms would be useful - there is an ecological consultants questionaire which is designed for people working in consultancy work to fill in their survey, capture data and monitoring - Might be worth putting on the RAUK?

Ta Jon, I have an evaluation version of MapInfo and the possibilities of using the programme for herp conservation seem very attractive. (Not to mention the ease of producing consultancy based reports at a few clicks of a mouse which will justify any price in my book). For example if everyone was using a standardised recording method one could easily look at distribution, density, age class structure, geology etc etc at local level, county level and even across the UK. Watching these trends into the future may be a key to conserving our herps. Imagine a map that showed habitat loss for reptiles due to development, and compared it to habitat gains (probably near to none) in the same period.. that would be very telling I'm sure! I'll have a look at mapmate and see if it does what I need for report writing, Excel sheets can also be uploaded directly into MapInfo so perhaps a standardised excel format that could be easily uploaded to both programmes is what we need? I particularly want an easy way of getting data from my Garmin GPS into these programmes for mapping refugia locations too.
