Ideal conditions meant that I was lucky enough to see around 20 female adders today at one site, of which the majority were basking alone or - in two cases - with another female. Clearly they were not attracting males, perhaps because they have not started to release pheromones yet, or more likely I think they are having their 'year off' from mating. But what interested me once again was the plumpness of several of them, as shown below. These scarcely look like animals that have given birth in the previous September and which must rapidly put on weight now. Instead, they look like they are reasonably gravid. I'm really going to have to try to get hold of a portable ultrasound to prove this one way or another (along with smooth snakes) - anyone know a tame vet with access to one?
