I was invited along to a proposed development site in Kent today and asked to comment on some mitigation strategies that are being implemented by consultants.

Since a DEFRA gcn licence has not yet been obtained the consultants were unable to build a traditional plastic barrier fence for reptiles. They have therefore deployed an amazintg piece of technology: 'The ACME Transparent Reptile Fence'.

Apparently, the sheer transparency of the fence will lull reptiles into a false sense of security and dissuade them from attempting any mad dash across that incredibly wide area of strimmed grassland .

Now remember folks you read it here first....

*sigh*

Before you ask, they haven't got a DEFRA mitigation license because they do not yet have planning permission. Think about it.
