A while back i was subject to an experiment, well wager really; weather or not the bite from a Great Diving Beetle would cause a strong histamine reaction. It did.

Last month i retrieved a bottle trap and found within it this Smooth newt (dead) and Great Diving Beetle.

Quite a nasty little night this Smooth must have had. Look at the swelling and blood seepage above and around the fore and rear limbs. In the past i've found Cresties (and other newts) with freshly missing digits and other such injuries, all from sharing a bottle with a Great Diving Beetle.

For a newt, the stuff of nightmares i would imagine and never pleasant to find.
