Hi Mark, this is the reply from Richard Griffiths

Gemma:

I've not heard of toads in amplexus at this time of year, although there is often low-level calling in the autumn. Toads have post-nuptial gametogenesis which means that they go into hibernation ready for breeding the following spring. Hence males often show well-developed nuptial pads in late summer/autumn, and if the weather is unusual, it may shift the reproductive cycle a bit. I'd be interested to know which part of the country this was - toads breed earlier in the west.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Richard Griffiths

If you can let me know where abouts you are, nearest big town/county would do, I'll pass the information on.
