Hello
I have simply (hmm, maybe not so simply) question. What is the function of colouration of the smooth snake? It seems to be cryptic, but I've met with the opinion that this is an example of batesian mimicry. In this case smooth snake would imitate adder, so avoid predation (assuming aposematic function of adders colouration and markings). Did you heard/read anything about this "coronella-vipera-mimicry" hipothesis? Edited by Stanislaw - 26 May 2011 at 8:33am |

I agree Stanislaw I see one this week end certainly looked like a young adder, and I hesitated and only the head indicated it might not be an adder as its markings were almost zig zag but not quite, but they are agressive and do bite, good job they dont have fangs, your English is better then my Polish Keith
