Do you think it was one of last year's young? The markings look partway between juvenile and adult male.

Could be, it wasn't large but I didn't think sub-adult or juvenile at the time either. Makes me wonder where it came from. The garden pond was only semi-functional for several years but they seem to have hung on and carried on breeding somewhere. |
