Well this looks more like a common lizard to me only by looks, but some expert plonker described it as a gecko and onother a fringe toed liz.

Hi Keith

Might be a tricky one actually! Trouble is, so far as I am aware, Common Liz not found in Portugal ! But, of course, being a newspaper they may not have been anywhere near Portugal !

But it certainly isn't any kind of Fringe Toed Lizard (generally Eremias and relatives!) Balkans and eastwards.

Might be young (probably male) hispanica - although not "typical" they have a huge range of markings.
