Hi Chris,

There are 2 main things that will help to protect Grass Snakes in Gardens.

1) Don't keep the garden too tidy, they love things like open compost heaps and plenty of cover. (They also use compost heaps as egg laying sights)

2) If you have a mown lawn, let some areas grow near where you saw the snake, but keep the rest very short from March to October, this makes it less likely that Grass Snakes will hide in the mown areas and be caught by the mower.

Froglife produce 2 advice sheets for Grass Snakes in gardens,

Advice sheet 2 - Snakes Need Friends, which is downloadable as a pdf file from:

Advice sheet 6 - Conserving Grass Snakes

Grass Snakes often hunt in rivers and other bodies of water for their favourite food, Frogs.
