Especially as I got lucky in the New Forest yesterday

Here's a good example of messing up a great opportunity by having too little depth of field

Depth of field looks fine to me Steve. If you're doing a head portrait then it's about right All the snakes head is in focus with blurred background .
Maybe the neck should be going off towards the back of the picture but, that's the only thing I see wrong here.
Good snap mate , and the top one too .
