My first and only newt of the season appeared today (rather a frosty night!)
Male palmate, making a fair attempt at a crest and breeding moult, in my garden pond, Surrey. They're on their way back! (I've had reports from the SW for well over a week now). |

Yes, the season has started in my Surrey garden pond too with both palmate and smooth newts seen as soon as the 8cms of ice had melted.

When the pond is free of ice or it's not chucking it down or blowing a gale I might manage to spot a few in my pond in East Devon!

Palmate Newts in my pond on Christmas day. Last few weeks spotted many of last years efts now 15-20mm. Tonight 20 odd adults including males busting moves for the females. First 'paired' frogs spotted last night. Middle of Bristol. |
