In June this year the experts undertaking the UK BAP Species & Habitat Review published a proposed new list of priority species and habitats to be included in Biodiversity Action Plans. It contains 1149 species and 65 habitats that have been listed as priorities for conservation action under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP). A couple of days ago it was announced that the Governments of all four UK administrations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) had adopted the list without any changes. There is only a small change for the amphibians with the Common Toad added to the existing priority species of Great Crested Newt, Pool Frog and Natterjack Toad. However for the reptiles all 6 native species are now on the list, which previously only had the Sand Lizard. Although it won't produce any more government money for conservation works, it could open up access to various grant / funding sources for such work where outcomes beneficial to reptiles are the main or part of the desired outcomes. Incidentally the list also includes ponds as a priority habitat that should have their own Habitat Action Plan rather than, as was often the case, being just a small part of a Standing Open Water plan that included lakes & reservoirs, canals etc. |
