very surprised to find a male adder curled up at around 60cm in a small gorse bush today, in the middle of a gale and perfectly visible to predators etc.  A second male was basking at the foot of the bush in a more typical way...

arboreal adder top left, terrestrial one bottom right..

Thanks - it was very odd, since a)a gale was blowing, b) there were plenty of suitable basking sites at ground level which afforded better cover c) I've seen reptiles up bushes at sunrise and sunset but this was the middle of the day...

That adder clearly hasn't read the rule book.

The wind here yesterday was fierce, everything reptile wise was tucked right down under the gorse and hedges.
