If you can't secure the site then it is down to visual survey.

Time commitment is the issue here. I've certainly determined presence of the four widespread species on many sites without a tin/ACO to be found - but it isn't a very practical approach regarding mitigation where really one is not  just looking at presence but rather relative population density.

Speaking from a non-development perspective it's much more interesting, challenging and mind focusing to survey without using refugia. However the guidelines that exist generally require their use (under normal circumstances) and if the site were a Slow-worm site you'd be lucky to see a handful of animals without.

Visually spotting slow worm seems very site dependent. I know some sites where on days like today with showers followed by warm sun spotting gravid females out in the open is very easy. I've surveyed other sites where adder, common lizards and grass snakes were all easily detected visually but the only slow worm records came from ACO. Depends a lot on the habitat I think.

Must admit I much prefer visual survey to ACO survey too, in fact it's very difficult to be good at ACO survey if one doesn't have years of experience of visual survey IMOH.

Exactly. You'd be lucky to see a Slow-worm (and possibly other species) in a rank featureless grassland meadow, whereas a brownfield site, for example, with patchy vegetation and obvious features a bit easier.

I dont think many reps like sloworms spend much time in the open, and tend to linger where theres a bit of cover ie bush verges and rocky out crops cliffs etc or dense heather keith
