Just wondering if people would mind posting their sightings of frog-spawn so we can see where abouts in the UK it is starting to arrive - it has been very mild in the South East with plenty of frogs in my pond so am expecting some hopefully in the next few days...

nice idea! a mate of mine told me he had three clumps already in his garden pond in Muswell Hill, North London. Approx date Feb 7-8th - this is about 1 month earlier than 'normal' and at least two weeks earlier than my earliest ever record for North London! I only hope we don't get an icy sting in the tail...

Hi Chubsta,

As i previously posted in the 'Herp a day' thread, an ISPOT contributor saw frog spawn near Tiverton, Devon on 28/01/16 and i noted my first of 2016 in a dingy roadside pond in the same county on 01/02/16:

Light frost last night but i've been keeping a regular watchful eye on my ponds and out and about searching in Glos during the last few days. Not seen any yet though.

Had over 30 frogs in my pond Saturday night, none this evening as the temperature has dropped close to freezing... Have a feeling that we (and the frogs of course) may have been tricked into thinking winter is over but there is still probably a way to go yet, here in the South East at least

I think you're right, based purely on probability we must be due a cold snap before mid/end of March...

Frogspawn found trapped in ice in a pond in a Bournemouth park this morning. About three clumps.

I looked back through a few emails and discovered that some years my neighbour didn't have frogspawn until the very end of Feb or even the first two weeks of March. I visited yesterday and he didn't have any. Also had forgotten that some years ago I'd had frogspawn in my pond and that also appeared at similar dates. So although we are in East Devon we aren't an early spot.

I know from experience that it's much more localised than that Suzi. Although all the spawnings at an individual site take place at the same time, a couple of miles down the road they might be days, possibly even weeks, earlier or later. I'm sure you would find frog spawn in east Devon if you searched further afield.

frog activity has completely died off in my pond, no sign of any over the last couple of nights and certainly no spawn - night temperatures are just above freezing so i guess that is to be expected.
weather forecast for the weekend sees rain and temperatures up to 10+ at night so perhaps that will trigger them.

Ben, what I meant about East Devon was actually just referring to my home patch locality. Yes there will be other earlier places I guess.
