Hi,
I found this newt recently and first impression was a smooth newt (approx 8-9cm), but close up it had some features of a great crested - dark coloured, slightly warty skin (not very smooth), speckled along side of head and body, orangle/yellow stripe at base of tail, slightly bulky look to it etc but no speckling on throat more like palmate. Any thoughts thanks? |

Looks like a female palmate newt to me. No spotting on the throat, and it's possible there's a glimpse of a white foot tubercule on the second photo. 8-9 cm is pretty much as big as palmates get.
They do look very slightly warty (and darker) when they're on land. She'll be bulky because she's developing eggs for next year's breeding.

Thank Caleb, my gut instinct was that it wasn't a GCN but then you start to question yourself.

I'm with Caleb on this one, female palmate most likely. No way it's a gcn, entirely the wrong shape, size and colour.
Have a look at http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/identification.asp for comparison.
